Christmas really is a magical time of year. Getting together with loved ones over good food and swapping presents – what’s not to love? It’s the perfect time to catch up with family and friends who you don’t see half as much as you would like throughout the year.

If you’re planning to be the hostess with the mostest this Christmas, it’s important that you get ready for guests in your home as soon as possible. December is just weeks away. Before the house becomes swamped with decorations and presents, you should think about preparing sooner rather than later. We have come up with a few of our top tips on how to declutter, clean and make space for any guests this season.

Spring (or Winter) Clean

A deep clean of the entire house is the best way to prepare for any big occasion. If you have guests who are going to be staying over, make sure you have cleaned the spare rooms from top to bottom. A thorough clean of the kitchen and lounge area will also be great, as you and your guests will spend the most time here. A deep clean now will mean you will just have to maintain it in the few weeks before your guests arrive.

Declutter the Kitchen

Clear out your cupboards and pantry and throw out anything that’s out of date. Use the full space of your cupboard or larder with more shelves or hooks. Then re-pack the entire thing and make sure you can clearly see everything. Throw out bulky boxes, and use transparent containers to store things like pasta and cereals. You can add labels to these for a nice touch.

There is a lot of preparation that goes into the Christmas day lunch. Declutter your workspace and make as much room as possible. This is an appropriate time to make sure you have everything, including utensils, plates and cutlery etc. Make a shopping list and grab anything you need before the big day.

Decoration Time

Ok, now you’ve cleaned, prepared and decluttered its time for the fun stuff – decorating! Whether you like the traditional style or something more contemporary, decorations are very much to everyone’s own taste.

Most of the colours involved are happy, bright colours. However recent trends are steering towards minimalist and simple decorations. There are no rules and regulations – just have fun.

If you’re in the market for some creative inspiration, a great way to update your Christmas décor is adding a twist on a traditional classic. Add some new colours, extra lights or festive cushions or throws.

Make your Guests Feel at Home

Whether they are staying for one night or one week, you want to make sure your guests feel like they are at home. Show them around upstairs. Explain where they can find towels and toiletries, should they have forgotten anything. Make sure their room is decluttered and there is enough room for their belongings during their stay.

Show them around downstairs too, explaining where they can hang coats or shoes when they come in. Make sure they know where everything is in the kitchen. You could keep the tea, coffee and sugar, along with a few mugs out on display so you don’t have to keep offering. Let them know they can help themselves, should they need anything to eat or drink.

If they want to do their own thing during the day, you could get them a key cut for them to come and go as they please.

Tidy Up the Bathroom

After a deep clean, you should create a serene and relaxing bathroom for your guests to use during their stay. Clear away any clutter, including cleaning products, toilet rolls, unused toiletries and towels or facecloths. You’ll have already shown them the linen cupboard, so they will know where to find their own towels etc. More people in the house means a higher chance of mess.

You could gift your guests with a luxurious bathrobe for their stay and put up over-the-door hooks for them to hang them on. They can also hang towels here if they need to. Roll spare towels and arrange them in a nice basket to save space and create a tidy atmosphere.
